He studied the piano with Albert Tietze in Viipuri for some years and from the age of 14 studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, where he was taught by Heinrich Ehrlich (piano), Robert Radecke and Ludwig Bussler (music theory), and Arno Kleffel (composition). From 1895 he studied composition privately with Bruch, according to whom he showed ‘an easy, felicitous, and remarkable flair for invention’.
